University Crafters’ Governing Document
Article I.—Name: University Crafters
Article II.—Purpose:
Our mission is to be a place where creativity can take place. There need not be talent, and nothing great needs to come from it, in fact, there is no need reflected here, except to create something. Creativity is a soothing activity. It reduces stress; it gives the mind time to shake out all of the kinks and wrinkles gathered in the week.
Of course, ambition is not to be frowned upon. Learning about the business side of art, for those who would like to have a future second income in crafting, this is the place they can exercise their crafts and learn how craft fairs work. We encourage members to be involved in the UC Art Fairs. In fact, several of our members have moved on to make their own craft businesses.
We also like to get involved in other clubs and other university activities that give us an excuse to make something. Whether it’s sewing a quilt or folding one thousand paper cranes, we enjoy being included in these events.
Article III.—Membership:
A. All students and graduate students are qualified for membership. Non-students may attend, but cannot be members.
B. In order to be voting members, one must attend more than one meeting during the semester that elections take place in, and be present at the time of elections.
C. A full member has access to the lockers where club supplies and equipment are kept, may elect new officers, and help choose new projects.
Article IV.—Meeting:
A. Meetings are held Mondays at 6PM to midnight in a conference room in the U.C.
B. Meeting times are available on group fliers and our website.
Article V.—Executive Board:
A. The officers of the group are as follows:
President—Contacts professional artists for demonstrations, keeps office hours at the cubicle, and has final say in deciding new projects and setting up meeting times.
Vice President—Sets up meeting times with University Center, keeps office hours at the cubicle, keeps track of supplies and machinery and tools that the club needs.
Treasurer—Buys new supplies, manages our MST account, handles donations, and does paperwork for ASUM funding.
Secretary—Updates our website and records minutes at meetings.
Spokesperson—In charge of group advertisements and fliers, and handles presentations to ASUM.
B. When vacancies arise, remaining officers cover the missing officer’s responsibilities or appoint interim replacements as needed until a new officer can be elected.
Article VI.—Elections:
A. All officers are selected by the membership. Officers are in power until they step down, are impeached, or are no longer students of the University of Montana. There are no hard term limits.
B. Members will be given at least one week of notice before an election is held. On the day of elections, members may nominate themselves or others for the available position. Nominees may refuse their nomination.
C. Nominees will be prompted to give a speech detailing their qualifications. After the candidates for a position have delivered their speech, members will write their vote on a piece of paper and hand it to the secretary, who counts the votes and announces the winner.
D. In the event of a tie, another vote will be held until there is a winner.
